How to Change Your AC Filter

Changing the AC filter is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to make sure that your air conditioner is performing at an optimal level. The job of an air filter is to keep the dust and other debris out of your HVAC system. In just a short amount of time, a surprising amount of dust can accumulate, which can cause your AC to work harder to cool down the house or it can even make it more difficult to breathe in your home. Changing your AC filter is so important because when the filter is clogged, the dust and dirt will find their way into the heart of the air conditioner and damage the system. The more wear and tear on your AC unit, the more likely your AC is to break down. A clogged filter also means that there is not enough air flowing through the AC unit to keep it working the way it should.

Both simple AC maintenance, such as changing your AC filter, and professional AC services are very important to preserve the longevity of a unit. If you are incapable of changing your AC filter on your own, we can take care of it for you!

How Often Should I Change the AC Filter?

Generally, you should change your AC filter every month to make sure your AC unit is running properly and to improve the air quality in your home. Changing your air filter monthly is especially important if you have pets or suffer from allergies or asthma. If you own a vacation home or live in a one-bedroom apartment with no pets and have no allergies, then you only need to change your air filter every 6-12 months. If you live in a home full-time with no pets, then you only need to change you air filter every 3 months. High-end pleated filters will last a longer period of time, which means you won’t need to switch them out as often.

Signs that Indicate It’s Time to Change the AC Filter

How do you know when it’s time to swap an old filter for a new one? There are a few signs that indicate when to change an AC filter.

The AC unit is too hot.

If you place your hand on the back of your AC unit and it is blowing air that is too hot, this means you should change your AC filter. Warm air should never come from the back of your AC unit.

The air isn’t cold enough.

If you feel like your AC is not cooling as well or as quickly as it used to, this may be an indicator that the AC filter needs to be replaced.

The electric bill has gone up.

If your electric bill has skyrocketed from one billing cycle to the next, chances are you need to change your AC filter.

Your allergies are bothering you.

If your air filter is changed regularly, breathing should be easy in your home. Frequent allergy attacks can be caused by not changing your AC filter regularly enough.

You notice more dust near the air vents.

If you can see the dust sticking to the air vents in your home, it is time to start thinking about changing your AC filter. This means that the filter is full and the dust has nowhere to go.

How to Replace an AC Filter

Changing your AC filter may vary depending on whether you live in an apartment or home as well as the size of your AC unit. Follow these general instructions to change your AC filter from our experts.

1. Turn the Power Off

Be sure to turn the air conditioner off when you’re changing an AC filter as a safety precaution. You will be exposed to live voltage and you also do not want to damage your equipment if debris is accidentally sucked in.

2. Locate the AC Filter & Assess Its Condition

AC units may house the filter in different locations so this might be a tricky part of the process. Some AC filters are located in the return air duct while others are near the blower system. If you are not sure where your filter is, contact our HVAC and refrigeration experts to help you find it. Next, you will want to check the condition of the filter you are removing to see if it needs to be replaced. If you don’t remember the last time your ac filter was changed, err on the side of caution and just replace it.

3. Make Sure the AC Filter Is the Correct Size & Material

Not all filters are the same, so when you are changing your AC filter, make sure you purchase the correct size. Air filters usually have the dimensions printed on the side. There is a wide range of AC filters on the market from inexpensive fiberglass to more high-end pleated air filter varieties. More expensive air filter options will block more than just dust; other filtration properties, or things you want the filter to collect, include things like pet dander, mold, mildew, smoke or even odors.

4. Fresh & Clean AC Filter

If you have a reusable AC filter, it’s not so much a matter of changing your AC filter as it is about cleaning it. All you will need to do is thoroughly clean the filter so that it can dry and be used again.

5. Insert the New or Clean Filter

Once you have made sure that everything is ok with your new filter, simply insert it where the old one was, following the directional arrows. Voila! You are done changing your AC filter!
