Freon Discontinued in 2020

air conditioners

Starting January 1, 2020, the AC refrigerant Freon (or R-22) will no longer be used for residential and commercial air conditioning units. To protect the environment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will limit the manufacturing and distribution of R-22 since its chemicals deplete the ozone layer. As the new Freon law can affect your air conditioning units, especially if it was manufactured before 2010, our AC/HVAC team at All Brands Corp. share key details regarding the reasons why Freon is being discontinued in 2020.

Is Freon Going Away in 2020?

Freon, or more specifically, R-22 will be discontinued by the EPA due to environmental concerns. Many homeowners will need to make the switch to more environmentally friendly AC refrigerants as Freon is a hazard to the environment if it leaks or is disposed of improperly. “It has chlorine in it and that is harmful to the ozone layer,” said Mike Evans, a field supervisor for Neal Harris Service Experts in Kansas. [1] Note that properly-functioning HVAC systems running on Freon do not need to be replaced immediately, but Freon will no longer be produced or imported as of January 1, 2020.

Is R-22 Freon Still Available?

R-22 Freon is still available, however, supply for the AC refrigerant has rapidly decreased since the announcement that it will be discontinued. With supply for R-22 running low, you’ll need to start budgeting since its price has soared to $200/lb, which is 4x more expensive than the newer Freon.

What Will Replace Freon in 2020?

R410A is the new, more environmentally friendly refrigerant that will replace R-22 Freon in 2020. However, R410A can’t be used in systems that run on R-22, which are most likely on their last leg. If your AC system was manufactured before 2010, it’s time to budget for a new one since AC units have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.

With Freon being discontinued in 2020, it’s more important than ever to stay on top of your unit’s maintenance. Our AC/HVAC professionals at All Brands Corp. take the stress of AC maintenance off your shoulders by scheduling visits twice a year; the first for cooling and the second for heating. To lengthen the lifespan of your AC unit, our team will meticulously clean out the filters during our maintenance visits.
