Should You Turn off Your AC When on Vacation?

Three friends load up a car, getting ready to go off on vacation.

If you’ve ever planned a trip out of town, then you know just how difficult it can be to keep track of all the things you have to do. Between booking a hotel, renting a car, having your mail held, and so much more, it is only logical that some aspects of vacation planning slip your mind, one of the most common ones being planning on what to do with your home AC. Should you leave it on or turn off your AC when you’re not home during that period?

Our all-AC Service professionals at All Brands Corp AC Inc. understand that the question of whether or not you should turn off your AC when on vacation is not a straightforward yes or no answer. Rather, it is a complicated question with answers that change based on multiple variables. Our air conditioning experts have created this quick guide to make deciding whether or not to leave your system on is a good choice, easier.

Should You Set Your AC When Away?

There are many arguments for and against leaving your ac unit on while you’re away, although there are many factors involved. The general rule of thumb is that you should leave the unit when the vacation is not going to last too long. But, understanding what temperature to set your air conditioner on when you’re away is just as, if not more, important than the decision of leaving it on itself.

What Temp to Set AC When on Vacation?

What temperature to leave a vacant house in summer vs. winter are two very different questions, but both, fortunately, have an answer! During the summer, you should have your AC set below 84 degrees. That will allow for the system to dehumidify and cool your home. Failure to do so could lead to mold formation. During the winter it is best to set your AC to roughly 65 degrees. Doing so will keep your system running while also protecting electronics and other valuables from any damage that might occur due to the weather.

Any Reason to Turn AC Off When on Vacation?

Now, why should you turn off your AC when on vacation and why? Your AC unit should be turned off when you’re taking a vacation that will be a bit longer, over a week, and the best-case scenario would be to have a programmable thermostat that cools your home a few days before your return. That will help cut down your energy costs and keep your home at a comfortable temperature for your return. Granted, you have a programmable thermostat.

Be sure to consider your pets when deciding whether or not to leave a unit running during a vacation. If you have pets that will be in your home during your absence, the answer to whether or not you should turn off your AC when on vacation, is a resounding no.
